Engine

Name: Chiyo L.

Make: 1998 Impreza 2.5RS

Mileage: 107000km

Time Out Of Use: 6 months

Problem And Likely Cause: Blown headgaskets resulting in overheating/cracked block

Reason Given For Denial: No longer warrantied

Your Story: I purchased my vehicle with 92000km on it. I had it inspected and the results were fine. A week afterwards, the check engine light came on and Subaru just reset the ECU and that was that. A few weeks later the erratic overheating begins and the CE light pops up again. Subaru tells me I'm low on coolant so they top it up for no charge and do another ECU reset and says I'll be fine. 20 minutes after I leave the CE lights come up again. I was told that my idle was just higher than normal which was why it was popping up and that I needn't worry. The next oil change which is now past my 100km warranty coverage, was at Subaru and I let them know that the overheating is happening more often and they now diagnose it as a cracked block. So I am now not covered under warranty left with a grenaded engine. I bring up that I suspected all along that it was blown headgaskets and they say they have never heard of that problem on 98 phase I engines?

Name: Bob Roth

Make: 2002 WRX Sedan

Mileage: 8K

Time Out Of Use: First time - 2 weeks, second time, unknown still

Problem And Likely Cause: TGV valve failures (CEL Codes 1090, 1092, 1094) - in 3 months ago and they supposedly replaced them. Back on again (same codes) today.

Modifications: Turbo XS muffler, Stromung DP (no cat - modified to split wastegate) and midpipe, Godspeed UP, Pulleys, catch can, water spray, coilovers and swaybars, new brakes and lines, colder plugs, UTEC

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes - covered first time, will submit again UPDATE: Denied coverage this time... claim that my 'catch can' install voids any warranty work.... lord.

Your Story: Car has been having intermittent TGV problems since new. Throws code, then seems fine for a while. Eventually, throws code all the time and the TGV stays stuck closed (car runs like crap!). Has been 'fixed' once - dealer was actually very good about mods, etc. I think they must have only replaced some of the pieces and not pulled the whole intake manifold - we'll see what happens this time....

UPDATE: Won't cover this time... catch can causing problems ????? So, anyone know of a place to get a TGV free intake manifold and have directions for pulling this piece. These have been a problem since day one for me, and I really only did mods after I thought they'd been fixed....

Name: Kong Thao

Make: 02 WRX Silver Wagon

Mileage: between 11500 - now 14450

Time Out Of Use: TOTAL of 4 times out = 2.5 months

Problem And Likely Cause: 4 times CEL-misfire caused by injectors, possibly ECU or pistons but that was replaced by whole block; replaced spark plugs 3 times, CEL still come up now

Modifications: bought Turbo XS BOV and MBC but never used them

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes- 4 times

Reason Given For Denial: 2nd time, thought to have been my fault for changing spark plugs to different heat rating; I never changed them, car was a demo car, must of been changed before me, was initially charged, fought and was later paid by SOA

Your Story: Every time the CEL came on, it was either I was turning on an intersection on a hill or going up the hill. Of course you have to accelerate to get up there. Laws are laws so I'm turning this WRX in for a new one, at least here in Minnesota.

Name: tnbd

Make: 2002 WRX wagon

Mileage: 45000

Time Out Of Use: repair

Problem And Likely Cause: Engine knock when cold - replaced timing belt tensioner.

Modifications: 17" tires in summer

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): yes

Your Story: The car was in for other issues and the dealer fixed this one at the same time.

Name: Lee Kay

Make: WRX 02

Mileage: 37,700

Time Out Of Use: 4 days so far

Problem And Likely Cause: Possible Valve cover seal gone.

Modifications: Up-pipe, (stock one caused several CEL after hitting debris on the interstate)

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: NONE

Your Story: My car has been leaking since day one. Never been able to prove the oil leak as they told me it was the oil flowing backwards from the oil change. So I finally had the proof on my new up-pipe with had burned oil stain running along it. Since the arrival of out cars it would seem that have gone through 3 gasket designs already.

Name: Tony Shulthise

Make: 2002 WRX

Mileage: 30,000

Time Out Of Use: 4 days so far...still counting

Problem And Likely Cause:
1. Front axle covers leaking grease and axle seems to have excessive play. No cause known.
2. CEL code P0564 constantly. Bad EGT?
3. Grinding going into first gear over 5 mph. Poor tranny design.
4. Small oil leak at front of engine
5. Small amount of oil leaking from head gaskets

Modifications: Intake, Exhaust, Uppipe, Intercooler water spray

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial:
1. covered
2. Not covered due to aftermarket exhaust
3. The dealer denied this was a problem. I guess they have never driven a Honda.
4. covered
5. Said small amount is not enough to replace head gaskets

Your Story:
1. Saw grease oozing from the front left axle housing next to the tranny when I was changing my oil. Took it in and they are changing out both sides under warranty. No questions asked.
2. Keep getting EGT code. Could be due to removal of the first cat. Can't fault Subaru for not covering this one.
3. The 2002 5sp tranny 1st gear synchro is a poor design. I believe Subaru knows this one is going to happen on most of their trannys and isn't willing to fork up the $$ to fix them all.
4. Replaced oil pump and front crank seal under warranty
5. Said it would have to be dripping on the ground before they would work on it.
