Make: 2000 Impreza 2.5RS
Mileage: 33,000
Time Out Of Use: Sum total - about 2 weeks
Problem And Likely Cause: Broken wheel studs, likely caused by corrosion of the studs
Reason Given For Denial: Dealership claimed "overtorqued lugs and fishy business" - Second dealership did cover later problem
Modifications: none
Your Story: This isn't a true denial, but the first dealership essentially denied the claim. I have had 7 wheel studs fail on my car. That's right, seven.
- #1 - Left Front. Shouldn't be covered. This was a cross-thread, plain and simple.
- #2 - Immediately followed #1. Capitol Subaru in Salem, Oregon performed repair of #1. Immediately following this repair, a second stud on the same hub failed. My observation was that the lugs were overtorqued. This likely caused this failure. Upon returning to the dealership (4 days later!), the staff was VERY adversarial and refused to perform the repair (under warranty or otherwise) for free. We have not returned to them.
- #3 - Same hub as 1 and 2. Repaired myself.
- #4 - Right rear. Repaired by Dealership B without warranty coverage.
- #5 and #6 - Right Front. Repaired Myself.
- #7 - Left Rear. Repaired by Dealership B under warranty. They were aware of my problems and were finally curious enough to pay for it and do some investigation.
All lugs are hand threaded on each time a wheels is changed. Torque is tightly controlled with a torque wrench (now set to 60 ft-lbs.) Lug nuts have been completely changed several times to solve problem. All stud failures have been original studs. No replacement studs have failed in any way. The apparent cause of the failure is corrosion of the protective coating on the wheel studs. The corrosion prevents the lug from being completely removed (it does loosen slightly before seizing and failing.)
In all I've spend almost $300 and lots of time repairing my car. It took 6 mysterious failures to get coverage- and only coverage for the 6th mysterious failure. I now have records of 11 studs being replaced by Subaru (all rears changed on each side plus one front) and only one of these was replaced as a warranty claim. I had all of the rear studs replaced at the same time due to the difficulty of replacing those studs. Even with the visual confirmation of corrosion on the studs, the dealership would not replace the remaining studs under warranty.
